It is critical for your Navistream tablet to remain powered on to ensure accurate ELD records. If your tablet is shutting off unexpectedly while in the vehicle, follow these troubleshooting steps to identify the cause and restore reliable operation.

1. Verify In-Vehicle Power Connection

Your Navistream tablet is intended to be plugged in at all times, the first step is ensuring the power path is uninterrupted.

  • Check the Port: Ensure the charging cable is seated firmly in both the tablet’s charging port and the vehicle’s power source (USB port or 12V adapter).

  • Inspect the Cable: Look for any fraying, sharp bends, or exposed wires. In a high-vibration vehicle environment, cables can wear down faster than expected.

  • Test the Power Source: Plug another device into the same vehicle port to confirm the vehicle is actually delivering power.

  • If your cable is not supplying power, replace the cord with a known good charging cable.

2. Inspect the Protective Case

If your Navistream tablet uses a ruggedized case or mounting dock, it could be interfering with the connection.

  • Alignment: Check if the case has shifted, potentially preventing the charging cable from clicking fully into the port.

  • Physical Damage: Inspect the case or dock for cracks or warping.

  • If the tablet is not charging while inside it's case, but charges when extracted from the case, the case may be failing.

3. Check Battery

Even when plugged in, a failing battery can cause a device to power cycle or shut down if it cannot hold a steady voltage.

  • The 10-Minute Discharge Test: Unplug the tablet from the vehicle power. If the battery percentage drops rapidly (e.g., more than 10% in a few minutes) or the device dies instantly, the battery is likely degraded and cannot support the tablet's power needs.

  • Check for Charging: Look for a lightning bolt symbol over the battery icon in the ELD Status menu. If the tablet is plugged in but the icon does not show it is charging, the tablet is running solely on battery power until it dies.

  • Battery Swelling: Remove the tablet from its case and look at the side profile of the tablet. If the screen appears to be lifting or the back is bulging, the battery has failed and the device should be removed from service immediately for safety.

4. Testing Tablet Outside of Vehicle

To determine if the issue lies with the tablet or the vehicle’s electrical system, you must test the device in a controlled environment.

  • Wall Charger Test: Take the tablet out of the vehicle and plug it into a standard wall outlet using a known-working USB adapter and cable.

    • Navistream tablets in protective cases may use a specialized screw, contact Support if you are unable to remove these screws.

  • Observation: Let the tablet charge to 100% and monitor it.

    • If it stays on: The issue is likely with the vehicle’s power adapter or the vibration of the mount.

    • If it still shuts off: The internal hardware is likely failing.
